Shells are a record of time and memory. A shell forms over the lifetime of the creature it protects, but the shell remains long after its inhabitant is gone. Works from this series are drawn on Duralar, a translucent, archival mylar. The process of layering several drawings one atop the other, collaging, and cutting into the surfaces becomes a metaphor for the passing of time and space. Each layer can represent a different stage of development, transience or decay. Viewers often observe other organic forms in my work such as internal organs or botanical forms. I welcome these associations and find them inspiring; many natural forms have similar growth patterns, suggesting that they are all interrelated. |
