I see the world as layers of structure and surface, one upon the other, constructing a magical place. I call my works constructions because like a builder placing one brick upon the other, I gather my materials and construct my own unique world. Each work can have many layers. Each layer is it’s own creation. The layers talk to me, eliciting a response and often the response is another layer. It’s like building a city or a house, a space to “be in”.

The Construct Series is comprised of two groups of work. The first is a series of frame-like boxes constructed of wood and canvas and painted with acrylic paint. They are in essence wall sculptures. These boxes are filled with layers of colored surfaces, mixed media materials and smaller structures. The surfaces and forms can be everyday objects, such as cut nails, hooks, tacks, mesh or metallic sheets combined with more organic papers and materials. They can be tied, glued, screwed, zipped, strung or nailed together, unifying them in a way that causes both tension and harmony. When arranged together, they become precious and jewel-like, beckoning the viewer to touch as well as look.

The second group is comprised of mixed media works constructed on canvas and encased in plexigas boxes. Many of the same materials are used as in the wall constructions, but these pieces are smaller and more intimate. I think of them as constructed drawings.

My work is spontaneous and controlled, playful and serious, my own personal yin and yang. Creating these constructed worlds is a mystical event for me. Although the ideas flow from one layer to another and one piece to the other, there are always surprises. Art is the magic of my life and like magic the excitement comes from not knowing exactly what will happen next.
