Ellen Roth Deutsch grew up in New York City during the 1940’s and ‘50’s in an artistic family. Her father and three uncles were nationally syndicated cartoonists and had an influence on the style of her work. She is largely self-taught. Her father, Irving (Roir) Roth was her main teacher. Her educational background and work history is in microbiology, biochemistry and genetics but she attended the Art Students League, New York City, figure drawing Saturday classes when she was 10 to 12 years old. Deutsch’s work is expressive, narrative and largely based on her own history. Her themes usually concern themselves with the fragility of life. Her imagery of theater and dance was influence by the Hollywood musicals and Broadway theater of the time; the Roxy, Radio City Music Hall, the Rockettes, Cyd Charisse, Fred Astaire, etc. and the razz-a-ma-tazz of choreographer Bob Fosse. She has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her artist books incorporate text along with visual imagery. One in particular, ‘Mr.Swift and the Brown Shoes’, is in the library collections of the SAIC, the MCA, the NMWA, Washington, D.C., and the Ragdale Foundation, Lake Forest, IL. Her paintings can be found in the collections of the James R. Thompson Center, Chicago; the State of Illinois Museum, The McDonalds Corporation, Oakbrook, IL; the Uncle Fun Foundation; plus many others. |
