Henri J. Doner-Hedrick is a second generation multi-racial Filipina American born in Monterey, California. She was raised in a military family; her mother was from Socorro, New Mexico and of European and Native Indian American decent, her biological father who died when she was four was from the Philippines; and her step father, a native of Kansas was Scotch-Irish. Doner-Hedrick lived in Japan while growing up and just recently returned to the States after working and residing in Amman, Jordan for the last two years. Although her education and upbringing were strongly influenced by Euro-American contemporary thought and practices, she draws inspiration from the histories of Emigrants and what the bridge generations of Americans have experienced. In her work she investigates Asian, Western and Middle Eastern cultures and utilizes icons and explores their symbolic importance in addition to dealing with the concept of how these images influence portraiture and art making.
