"Still Screaming” is a body of work that explores the regulation and victimization of women that persists due to religious dogma and patriarchal control. Through my paintings I expose the harsh reality that many women face each day and symbolically reveal the malevolent entities that perpetuate injustice to womankind.

In the “Still Screaming” series each painting begins as a theatrical still life arrangement and becomes a powerful social statement. Dolls are the most important symbolic element in my work because dolls are both familiar and powerful icons that represent very specific ideas. Barbie is used in “Identity Crisis” to represent the impossible physical female ideal that many women, including myself feel compelled to achieve in order to be accepted by society and to be attractive to men. Raggedy Ann is tied to a cross in “Keep Your Rosaries off My Ovaries” to represent innocent girls who are initiated into the control and manipulation of religious ideology without the benefit of free will or choice. Fear is a convenient tool in religion, and Raggedy Ann conveys fear through her muffled stare. Careful consideration is given to other compositional elements as well including strategic viewpoint, dramatic lighting and symbolic use of color.

The process of researching each story and resolving the scenario through a still life narrative is both fascinating and emotionally engaging. I am motivated by each story to explore another and to find new ways of exposing each reality. Through my work I hope to create awareness and to open dialogue for change.
