My abstract paintings are built up in layers, using acrylics and various dry media (charcoal, pastels, litho crayon, graphite, oil stick) - first making marks or scribbles, then painting over. I repeat this process many times before being satisfied that the piece is finished. Using this layering process, the painting is not pre-planned, but emerges from my feelings of the moment and goes through many transformations before it is done, resulting in expressive, in-the-moment abstracts. Recently I have been experimenting by adding collage to my paintings, usually tissue and or rice papers, which add depth and a tactile surface. I never have any idea of what a painting will look like until I am finished - loving the journey and the element of surprise at the end. This keeps the process fresh and exciting for me, an energy that is reflected in the finished piece. |
