The paper mache/fiber work of Ulla Anobile is inspired by such folk art traditions as the mask, the doll, the totem and the altar, which she interprets through her own insights.

Her inspiration comes from dreams, mythology and folklore as well as nature. Her love of nature goes back to childhood summers spent in the unspoiled Finnish countryside, and her work often reflects on the spiritual connection between humans and nature.

Her fiber work also includes dolls, wall hangings, ornaments and finger puppets. She uses cross-stitching and other kinds of embroidery as embellishment; skills learned in the traditional (no longer existent) school for girls she attended in her native Finland.

He sculptural masks have been included in reviews of contemporary mask making at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art in Alaska, The Clymer Museum in Ellensburg WA, and locally in exhibitions at Pico Rivera Centre for the Arts, the City of Los Angeles World Airports Exhibition Program and Pierce College.

She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States as well as in England and Finland.

Ms Anobile, a former journalist, was born in Helsinki, Finland and has lived in Los Angeles, California since 1975.
