Charlotte Bynar works solely in watercolors. She strives to broaden the use of watercolors technically and in subject matter. Because watercolors are largely unforgiving, Bynar paints with intent on accuracy while also maintaining space for movement. She considers the use of white paint the admittance of her own mistakes; therefore the whites in her works are the raw paper, untouched. Bynar, preferring challenging subject matter, is drawn to exploring the struggles of the human condition.

“I aim to create a visual image to represent the images that we see in our minds, a psycho-realism approach to painting. My series ‘Piranhas’ explores the correlation between the darker aspects that individuals struggle with and their effects. The piranhas represent the individual’s stresses and the rest tells how he/she reacted. Some reach for vice, violence or weld their doors shut. Some become ‘beside themselves.’ These paintings aim to tell a story of the mind.” (Flagstaff, AZ)
