I consider the images in these pieces to be cultural icons from the 1970's. These retro toys demonstrate the gender roles which may have been adopted by children, even though society was encouraging less gender-specific play. As a parent, I observed my children's peer pressure with preschool classmates—playing as cowboys, army men, or homemakers. The power of these seemingly innocent toys is frightening to a parent trying to raise sons and daughters without gender pressure. The toys are shown in both dramatic shadow and repeated as large, looming heads to give the viewer a feeling of being overpowered. The repetition of iconography as a pattern in each piece represents the ubiquitous idealized imagery in our culture.
