My art explores aging, agriculture, nature and science, the concepts of plenty and want, reuse, food systems, and being human, through a variety of media, including high-fired clay artist's books, growing, installation, found objects, fiber, and bronze. Why corn? It is solidly Midwestern, as I am. I have found, through the deep exploration of corn, more than is history and imagery; I have found the fundamentals of humanity itself. I made these books in the early stages of art-making, while finding my way as an artist, a newlywed, and a woman. I researched ridiculous etiquette for women at the Newberry Library. I incorporated real photographs from an elder whom I knew in the nursing home where I worked. They have been repeatedly ripped and mended and are beautiful objects because of that ongoing loop. What you see and hold are the copper, bronze, silver, and gold results of that research and incorporation of items. Please, have a seat, put on some gloves, and enjoy Hanky Books.
