Black Body Polity: Representations of the Black Female Form
This painting is an example from a series that explores the complexities of Black femininity and identity. The living effects of racism, sexism and economic oppression are reflected in each portrayal, however secondary to the primary expressions of strength, survival and a refusal to be defeated.
Further, work in this series challenges the overly sexualized portrayals of Black women prevalent in mainstream culture. Without negating womanness, these paintings serve to highlight Black women's humanity by showing in honest detail the nuances of African-descended female bodies.
