In the ancient past the double-wall bowl was used as a vessel of ritual and purification, though its precise purpose is unknown. I've long had a fascination with the sculptural possibilities, and the inherent spiritual significance of isolating a pure inner space by a protective outer wall. My exploration of form has led me to further isolate and hide the inner bowl by enclosing it completely under a small lid. Surprise awaits when the lid is lifted and such a tiny space out of proportion to the size of the pot is revealed. The richly decorated outer skin assigns them to the realm of ceremony. I think of them as reliquaries, not for bits of bones and hair but where one might place a precious thing – a hummingbird's nest, a locket, a lover's ring or a secret.
