Letter from the Directors:

Beate C. Minkovski, Pamela Callahan

Welcome to the Spring 2002 edition of the WMG newsletter. As we celebrate our 10th year of existence we are so proud of our accomplishments and so thankful for the support of all those who have participated in our growth. Wise leadership, guidance and hard work by staff and board members, generous monetary support by numerous individuals and organizations, countless hours spent by many volunteers in a multitude of job assignments, the ever-growing number of people who visit the Gallery, view the exhibits and purchase art - ALL have contributed to the success of WMG.

This 10th year started with a fabulous winter season. Our Holiday Bazaar, together with our participation at the Newberry Library's Bazaar helped our revenues soar above last year's. Entries for juried exhibitions have increased dramatically and we thank our jurors Rosemary Luckett, Faith Ringgold and Judith Raphael for their outstanding work selecting artists for the Censorship Show, the 5th International Open and the Invented Figure exhibition. Membership is up and climbing steadily with more and more individuals recognizing the value of our work on behalf of women artists and more artists realizing the assets of association with Woman Made Gallery.

One of the greatest benefits in being affiliated with our organization is Woman Made's indelible presence as a respected resource for art and artists. Curators, business people, gallery owners, government and other organizations all look to Woman Made Gallery when seeking artists for projects and exhibitions. Having knowledge of the diverse works of so many women artists through our exhibitions, workshops, gallery slide registry and on-line registry, we are in the position to promote them, to connect them with opportunities and contacts in the art world beyond what each artist would be able to do by herself.

A few success stories: Jude DiPaolo's work "Lady in Blue" was selected for the cover of the 2002 Women in Business Yellow Pages and Deva Zuckerman's painting "Icon" graces the cover of the Women's History Month Calendar produced by the City of Chicago. Both women are participants in our online registry, have previously exhibited at the Gallery and participated in workshops. Patricia Duffy, Director of AnamArt Gallery in Naperville, IL has found numerous artists on our website and now successfully represents their work in her establishment. Artist Lorraine Sack took Janet Bloch's Career Day workshop and has benefitted from her advice, debuting her first solo show at LyonsWier Gallery. These are just a few examples out of so many instances where WMG has guided women artists in their artistic careers. It is in this fulfillment of our mission that we are most proud, that has propelled us through ten years and now beyond.

And there's more! Coming events this spring include 'You the Juror', a new workshop offered by WMG Directors which takes place on Saturday, April 27th. Don't miss this opportunity to learn firsthand what the jurying process is all about! Please sign up for it NOW.

WMG kicks off its 2002 Reading Series with 'The Invented Figure' Reading on Sunday, May 5th (special bonus: a book of womens' writing inspired by the Invented Figure exhibition will be available at the reading; see page 3 for details). On Sunday, June 9th, WMG hosts teen writers from Literature for All of Us, who will read works in keeping with the theme of the Autobiographies show.

Other WMG projects working with Chicago Communities in School to bring more art projects to Chicago Public School students.

We welcomed spring with our major annual fundraising event, the Spring Soirée & Art Auction Benefit on March 8th. A formal THANK YOU goes out to all who gave time, talents and donations (see pages 3 & 8 of this newsletter for a list of names). This gala is a huge effort and was once again a huge success, supplementing our budget with funds necessary to support our programs that keep women's artistic contributions in the limelight. With the continued dedication of all who believe in this mission, WMG's future looks grand indeed.

p.s. SAVE THE DATE: Mark your calendar now to join us for our 10-year Anniversary Celebration starting August 2nd in concurrence with the opening of the 9th Annual Member's Show and through the weekend. Details will be in the SUMMER newsletter...

WMG Board & Staff News:

We are glad to have a new part-time employee, Jori Lewis, a graduate from the University of Chicago, to help with the mounting workload at the Gallery. We are also very lucky to have TWO interns from the School of the Art Institute: Kristine McDermott and Alexis Elton. Both have the opportunity to learn about the varied functions of a not-for-profit organization while working 14 hours each per week.

Our committed volunteer staff assigned to regular Gallery tasks includes: Sonia Kruitwagen, Kari Doyle, Nancy Nield Buchwald, Kindy Kruller, Tiffanie Amirante and Kiera Faulkner.

Juror's Statements:

Faith Ringgold was the juror for the 5th International Open in March 2002. She selected 45 artworks by 30 artists and chose Gisèle Perreault's artwork "Sitting on Top of the World" for the invitation cover. Joyce Owens from Illinois was awarded a solo show in 2003, Linda Rudin Frizzell from California won second prize and third prize went to Laurie Zeszut from Washington. Here is her juror's statement.

"How do I jury a show? I look at all the work and then I begin to create the shape of the show from what I have. Is there a pattern of strong aesthetics and compelling ideas? Is there an interesting cultural diversity of techniques and materials? And finally is all the good work in the show? The answer to the last question is---There is a taste of luck in the final selections. We can only have so many in any one show. The bottom line is "just keep trying." If you have ever juried a show you know that there are so many people who are good enough to be in but, for one reason or the other, they are not. Please forgive me if I failed to select your work. I know I was never juried into a show. Rejection made me angry, but I cut an opening and sashayed on in -- So can you.

artwork_by_Joyce_Owens

I am still amazed by the freshness of aesthetic vision and dedication to women's ideas, issues and materials I reviewed. We have arrived in the 21st century speaking in a clear and resonant voice. Is there anyone still asking -- What is women's art? I am excited to be a part of the Women's Art Movement, The Feminist Art Movement, the only movement in the history of art that was begun, not by critics, art historians or collectors but by artists -- WOMEN ARTISTS. Right on Woman Made - I love you. - Faith Ringgold

Judith Raphael was the juror for the "Invented Figure" on exhibit from April 5 to May 16, 2002. From 294 applicants Ms. Raphael included the work of 33 women in the exhibition. Please read her juror's statement.

Part of the criteria I used for choosing the art in "The Invented Figure" was published in the application for the show. I wanted works of art based on the figure as a metaphor for human experience and I was hoping to see images which went beyond a mere recording of the body. For any juror, making an evaluation of a work of art ultimately rests on a combination of the breadth of their experience informed by their point of view about what to expect in a work of art. I think the two things I valued most in the pieces I chose was a sense that they were part of a dialogue with visual ideas current in the culture and that they possessed a personal vision. Personal vision means that at some level, the artist has a point of view, an eccentric and original eye. For me, that is an essential quality in a work of art to keep my interest and earn my respect.- Judith Raphael

Gallery News Brief:

'Victory Over Violence' Through Art

In an effort to seek creative solutions for violence in the Chicago community Woman Made Gallery’s visiting artists are working with the Neopolitan Lighthouse to bring art projects to Chicago Public Schools. The class is introduced to a segment called ‘Victory Over Violence’, where the students are shown a video called ‘Quest For Peace: Working Together Toward A Non-Violent World’, followed by a postcard art project taught by artist Monica Ong.

The postcard includes a Peace Pledge on one side and the other side is the canvas for the student’s creative expression. After dialoguing about violence and the values that are important to healthy relationships, the students create collages on these postcards to share their personal messages with the world. Over 300 postcards have been collected from students at Orr High School, Mark T. Skinner and Brownell Schools. Woman Made Gallery will exhibit the postcards during the 'Political Woman' exhibition from September 13 to October 10, 2002. This program and many others in the public schools are coordinated by WMG senior advisor and artist Janet Bloch.

The 5,000 Flowers Project:

The 5,000 Flowers Project:
In Response to September 11, 2001

Envisioned by Carol Adamec and Sondra Diepen

As the tragedy of September 11, 2001 continues to reverberate around the world, the effects of those events resonate within each of us in many different ways.

As artists, we grappled with the questions: "How do we respond in a meaningful way to an event as global as this one while remembering those directly impacted by this tragedy? How can we as artists create images that help to heal ourselves and others as well as transcend to a greater vision for the future?"

The 5,000 Flowers Project came into being when it became clear that we as artists best express our feelings and concerns through our creative skills.

Our intention is for the 5,000 Flowers Project to be a positive remembrance connected to each life lost as a result of the September 11 tragedy, while seeking the significance that can inspire a greater good.

We chose flowers as the theme for the Project. Symbolic and universal to celebrations and funerals alike, the forms, the colors, and the fragrances offer comfort and delight, spontaneously appreciated by humans of all cultures, and a traditional subject in the arts. We selected 5,000 as a number to include those accounted for on the "official" list and those perhaps not accounted for on any list.

artwork_by_Louie_Laskowski

We freely offer the 5,000 Flowers Project concept to artists and communities as an idea for exhibitions and events which support creative expressions that promote healing and renewal in their communities. We freely offer the 5,000 Flowers Project to any one wishing to implement this idea and sponsor a venue. We only ask that the spirit and intention stated herein are embodied in your efforts.

We envision a multitude of 5,000 Flowers Project exhibitions occurring simultaneously across the United States-perhaps even the world--ideally with opening receptions for the public on September 11, 2002. Just as the seeds of the next season are contained in each flower, we envision the exhibitions generated from the 5,000 Flowers Project will be the seeds of understanding, peace, and promise for a world of tolerance among all peoples.

We envision the 5,000 Flowers Project will call forth the highest level of expression by artists to honor the lives of individuals lost as a result or consequence of events on September 11, 2001, in such a way to celebrate a life at its fullest, its most beautiful, and its most fragile.

We envision that the 5,000 Flowers Project exhibitions will be inspirational and heartfelt for both the participating artists and the viewers at every level of appreciation.

We extend to you our sincere encouragement in pursuing your 5,000 Flowers Project endeavor. We believe that all efforts can foster a healing and renewal that the peoples of our planet long for.

WMG 2002 Reading Series:

Woman Made Gallery will be hosting six readings in 2002, one per month from May through October, all open to the public free of charge. The first two readings of the year are collaborations with two wonderful organizations, Moon Journal Press and Literature for All of Us (for details, see Worthy Organizations on page ??). Hope you can join us! artwork_by_Linda_Rudin_Frizzell

Starting off the year... On Sunday, May 5 from 2-4pm, Woman Made¹s Invented Figure exhibit will be accompanied by a reading of literary pieces on the same theme. Nina Corwin curated the reading from entries submitted by women writers across the US (and the UK!). Corwin will also MC the event. Many of the authors who read (plus others unable to attend) will be featured together with select images from The Invented Figure show in a book created by Moon Journal Press to accompany the exhibit. We are all excited about the excellent quality of writing and about this first-time collaboration between Woman Made Gallery and Moon Journal Press.

On Sunday, June 9th from 2-4pm, Woman Made Gallery will host Literature for All of Us for a poetry reading during the Autobiographies show. The reading will feature original work of teen mothers who are part of a book group at the G.E.D. program at Teen Parents Services-Central of the Illinois Department of Human Services, 2014 S. Michigan. Two examples of their moving and vibrant poetry are included here:

Belly Dance
by Kellie Lenoir

The only belly dance I know
Is pushing my baby out!

Hunh!
Hunh!

That's the only dance I know.

Surviving
by Brenette Sigler

A woman can't survive
by her own breath
alone.

But she can survive by
speaking her mind and
thinking for herself.

She can recognize that
she is her own person and that
she follows no one.

She know that
she is strong and powerful and
can't nothing hold her down.

Visit WMG's table at the Printer's Row Book Fair on June 1 and 2 (Sat/Sun) for great deals on handmade journals, cards, and poetry books, including the new book created in collaboration with Moon Journal Press!

Exhibition News:

Woman Made Gallery Celebrated Women's History Month with the
5th INTERNATIONAL OPEN EXHIBITION

artwork_by_Yoyce_Owens

45 works from 30 artists across the country were featured in Woman Made Gallery's 5th INTERNATIONAL OPEN, a group exhibition juried by renowned artist Faith Ringgold.

Artworks in the exhibition ranged from painting to sculpture, digital photography to fabric and collage. All represented fresh strong voices and together, they formed a powerful chorus of women's voices spanning many cultures, generations and perspectives. Examples of work included: Louie Laskowski's Destiny's Circus and Winter Bloom, in which she transforms clothing with wood and paint "into experiences that hopefully bring more understanding and respect to the female condition"; First Prizewinner Joyce Owens' paintings My Own Eve and American Heroes I and II are elegant portraits honoring "my ancestral mothers and fathers’ and slavery survivors"; Sharon Lee's bright and seemingly whimsical paintings, The Toothache and Housewife Series, "explore female-centered situations, pepper these situations with humor, attract viewers through color and surprises--all the while demanding the contemplation of my personal take on the situation"; Nancy Camden's imaginative sculptures Night Ride on the Crazy Quilt, Seek Not and Housewife also prompt a smile, yet "the underlying theme seems to be boxed women trying to escape"; and Andrea Ginsburg, whose graceful ceramic and paper sculptures, Reaching and Eva, are a combination of cultural, natural and personal elements "always reaching towards strength and peace."

5th INTERNATIONAL OPEN artists included: Sharon Davie Barrett (IL), Kendra Bayer (IN), Nancy Camden (MI), Sharon Coffin (CT), Jane Darin (CA), Keina B. Davis (CA), Melanie Deal (IL), May DeViney (MA), Carol Es (CA), Linda Rudin Frizzell (WA), Andrea Ginsburg (IL), Shirley Guay (IL), Jennifer Maria Harris (CA), Louie Laskowski (IN), Sharon Lee (PA), Tess Little (OH), Jane Lubin (CT), Robin McCauley (CA), Monica Ong (IL), Joyce Owens (IL), Gisèle Perreault (IL), Ellen Jean Price (OH), Michelle Sales (IL), Hee-Jae Suh (CA), Colette Veasey-Cullors (MD), Saudia Wadud (KS), Elin Waterston (NY), Cathy Wells (NY), Carole Werder (PA), and Laurie Zeszut (CA).
